28.9% decrease in ‘protesto’ cases in 2017

Cairo ranks first in debt value of paid ‘protesto’ cases, debt value reaches EGP 13.4m, states CAPMAS


The Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) issued a recent report on the “protesto” cases and the bankruptcy rules’ statistics in 2017.

The CAPMAS said that the number of paid “protesto” cases reached 6,560 cases in 2017 compared to 9,226 cases in 2016 with a decrease of 2,666 cases by 28.9%.

The debt value of paid “protesto” cases reached EGP 56.9m in 2017 compared to EGP 81.3m in 2016 with a decrease of EGP 24.4m by 30%.

Moreover, the number of non-paid “protesto” cases reached 19,935 cases in 2017 compared to 32,850 cases in 2016 with a decrease of 12,915 cases by 39.3%.

The report added that debt value of non–paid “protesto” cases reached EGP 717.6m in 2017 compared to EGP 765.2m in 2016 with a decrease of EGP 47.6m by 6.2%.

The Cairo governorate was ranked first in term of paid “protesto” cases by 1,234 cases at 18.8% followed by Menofia governorate with 802 cases with a percentage of 12.2%, then Assiut with 543 cases with a percentage of 8.3%, of the total number of cases.

Cairo governorate also ranked first in terms of the debt value of paid protesto cases, where the debt value reached EGP 13.4m by 23.6 %, followed by the Menoufia governorate, where the debt value reached EGP 5.9m by 10.4%, then the Beni Suef governorate, where the debt value reached EGP 5.6m by 9.8 % of the total debt value.

The Cairo governorate ranked first in terms of the number of non-paid “protesto” cases, with 3,162 cases by 15.9%, followed by the Beheira governorate, with 2,807case by 14.1%, then the Giza governorate, with 1,479 cases by 7.4 % of the total number of cases.

The Giza governorate ranked first in terms of the debt value of non-paid “protesto” cases, where the debt value reached EGP 459.8m by 64.1 %, followed by the Cairo governorate, where the debt value reached EGP 39.7m by 5.5 %, then the Suez governorate, where the debt value reached EGP 35.5m by 4.9 % of the total debt value.

The CAPMAS noted that the number of bankruptcy provision cases reached one case in 2017 compared to two cases in 2016, a decrease of 50%. The debt value of bankruptcy provision reached EGP 0.2m in 2017 compared to EGP 93.9m in 2016, a decrease of 99.8%.
