At least 21 members of the Zamalek Sporting Club fan group, the Ultras White Knights (UWK), were arrested on Friday, when they were demonstrating against the chairperson of the club, Mortada Mansour, local media reported.
The UWK said in a statement last Wednesday that the war against fans has never ceased since Mansour was elected. “Mansour incited the security forces against us, seeking to stigmatise our group with terrorism,” the statement read. Further, it noted that the group is not political and only loves to cheer for Zamalek, saying that has been their motivation since UWK was established in 2007.
Meanwhile, the UWK statement further read that the group does not reject any invitations for dialogue, but it believes that it will never succeed unless all jailed fans, including its leading members Sayed Moshagheb and Mostafa Tolba, are released.
Moshagheb and others were arrested following the Air Defence Stadium events, when 22 Zamalek fans were killed in February 2015. He and seven others are accused of setting up an illegal group with the aim of sabotaging the constitution and preventing the state from carrying out its functions, as well as harming society and national unity.
