Health Minister Ahmed Emad El-Din said that Egypt treated 1.5 million citizens infected with hepatitis C by the end of 2017.

This came during his speech at the inauguration of a number of development projects in Menoufiya in the presence of Egyptian President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi.

“During 14 months, we completed check-ups for 5 million citizens,” Emad El-Din said.

“We target conducting full check-ups for 30% of Egyptians within three years,” the health minister added.

The minister asserted that Egypt has become a model for the world in the elimination of the virus.

Previously, in October 2017, Gamal Esmat, professor of Hepatology and Endemic Medicine and member of the National Committee for Liver Disease Control, announced at the 9th conference of the National Hepatology and Tropical Medicine Research Institute (NHTMRI) that Egypt is the world’s leading country in the treatment of hepatitis C.

“There are four to five million people who are not aware that they are infected with hepatitis C in Egypt,” Esmat said.

He assured that the problem that Egypt faces now is the discovery of the disease and reaching the four to five million who are infected by the virus and unaware of their undetected infection.
