Careem, the ride-hailing company, aims at increasing the number of “captains” (drivers) working with it from 60,000 now to 200,000 by the end of 2018.
Rami Kato, Head of Careem Egypt Operations, told Daily News Egypt that the company will add 140,000 captains over the coming 18 months to increase the spread of its services and meet the needs of all customers.
Careem had also announced it has invested in bus transport network Swvl, the brain child of former Careem market launcher Mostafa Kandil, fulfilling its mission to build an institution for the region. The investment, $500,000 in seed funding, will be used to help Swvl expand into new cities and markets, as well as roll out new product features within its app, including new payment options. In addition to the investment, Careem’s Chief Experience Officer and Co-founder Magnus Olsson will be joining Swvl’s board of directors.
“Swvl and Careem share a similar mission in that we both desire to resolve the transportation challenges facing the MENASA region,” said Olsson.
