ChaoMing Facebook page administrator sentenced to 1 year in prison

The page was accused of leaking thanaweya amma secondary school exams

Al-Waraq Misdemeanour Court sentenced the administrator of the ChaoMing Facebook page to one year in prison and a fine of EGP 20,000, on charges of leaking thanaweya amma secondary school exams on social media pages.

The prosecution said that the IP address of the computer and the SIM card of his mobile phone were matched those used on pages that have been leaking exams. However, the page administrator, who is a 19-year-old student, denied all accusations levelled against him.

Over 20 people had been arrested on charges of leaking exams on the internet since the start of exams earlier in June. The arrests came as part of a crackdown on exam fraud.

Since the beginning of the exam season in early June, all exams have been leaked on social media, either prior to or during the exam time. However, the Ministry of Education denied some leaks.

A major protest at the ministry’s headquarters in downtown Cairo was dispersed by security forces in June, and dozens of students had been briefly detained over the protest.

The thanaweya amma exam leaks have put the Ministry of Education under increasing pressure, raising more and more questions about Egypt’s education system, which many are calling to reform.
