Syrian opposition leader in Cairo to prepare for April conference

The meeting also discussed latest updates on the situation in Syria

The Syrian National Coordination leader Hassan Abdel-Azim arrived in Cairo Monday to meet with foreign ministry officials.

The meeting aims at reviewing the latest updates on the situation in Syria, and preparing for the Syrian opposition meeting in Cairo, coming up in April, the foreign ministry reported in an official statement.

Sunday marked the fourth anniversary of the Syrian revolution, which took off in the city of Daraa. Syria has gradually become home for multiple Al-Qaeda-affiliated insurgents, such as the Al-Nusra Front and “Islamic State”. Since them, the situation has majorly devolved, leaving thousands of people dead including children, and more than 3 million refugees across border countries, according to United Nations reports.

Abdel-Azim, a senior leader in the oppositional Syrian National Coordination committee, is among a delegation representing the Syrian opposition in Cairo. He has made several visits to Cairo in 2015, along with other oppositional leaders, met with Egyptian foreign affairs minister Sameh Shoukry to form a united oppositional front.

“Egypt has a leading role in uniting Arabs and creating change,” Abdel-Azim was quoted as saying in the foreign ministry statement.

The upcoming conference in April aims to discuss the Syrian conflict at a higher level to reach a settlement and stop the ongoing bloodshed in Syria, and retain security.
