Giza Governor Ali Abd al-Rahman delivered his resignation to Prime Minister Hesham Qandil on Wednesday and announced the suspension of work at the governorate building until the return of security.

Abd al-Rahman’s resignation came after 16 died and 200 were injured in clashes outside Cairo University on Tuesday night between supporters and opponents of the president. The clashes continued until dawn and drew involvement from neighbourhood residents.

“Allow me to express regret for the incidents of violence and killing that took place outside Cairo University during clashes between supporters and protesters against the regime… this horrifying scene was due to the lack of a national stance to prevent bloodshed,” the governor’s resignation read, according to state news outlets.

Abd al-Rahman asked Qandil to accept his resignation in solidarity with the innocent lives lost in the clashes.
