CAIRO: An Egyptian activist was released from prison on Sunday evening, six days after his prison term had ended.

Ahmed Abu Douma began a three-month prison sentence in July, reduced from six months on appeal after being convicted of assaulting police officers during a demonstration in downtown Cairo in May.

Youth activists had demonstrated on Saturday in protest at the failure of the authorities to release Abu Douma, who according to the Masrawy news site has launched legal action against the Interior Ministry for filing false charges against him.
